Gregory mutasa
Born in 1959 in Rusape, Zimbabwe, his graceful sculptures of the female form are instantly recognisable and most sought after by collectors worldwide.
Gregory Mutasa went to St Lukes Primary School and then proceeded to secondary school at St Faiths Mission for three years where he studied art and left after passing Standard VI. Mutasa is one of the most prominent names among the second generation of Zimbabwean Sculptors.
As a sculptor, Mutasa prefers to work with harder stones such as Dolomite, Lepidolite and Springstone to achieve his signature finish. He learned the basic techniques of stone carving at a craft centre in Rusape, and then joined a curio exporter in Harare, where he carved representational animals and heads in Verdite and Ivory.
Gregory came under the influence of his brother Joe Mutasa, a widely respected Zimbabwean artist, who urged him to create art rather than mass-produce repeated themes. Over the last thirty years Mutasa has become a well-established name and globally recongised sculptor.
